In the late 1860s and 70s, the county schools were broken down into township and each of the JPs were responsible for their districts.  At that time the Judge of the County appointed A. C. Jones and Dr. E F. McCammon to examine teaching candidates for township schools.  This is a list of the townships and justices:

Marion Twp - James H. Crawford and John Forrest

Palestine Twp - R. J. Hardy and J. I. Robinson

Eagle Twp - A. A. Anderson and D. Etheridge

Ouachita Twp - Josias Lee and L. W. Scarbrough

Clay Twp - Matthew Ramsey and J. L. Wall

Moro Twp - James Williams and D. M. Owens

Washington Twp - A. A. Adams and Thos. A. Richardson

Redland Twp - James R. McCulloch and W. B. Selman
